Kuwait bans illegal crypto mining, uses national enforcement to clean up residential mines
According to PandoraTech News, Kuwaiti authorities recently launched a nationwide law enforcement operation to crack down on illegal cryptocurrency mining, and more than 60 people have been investigated. The operation was led by the Kuwaiti Public Prosecution and was personally directed by Acting Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef and Minister of Electricity, Water Resources and Renewable Energy Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem, showing the government's high attention to cracking down on unlicensed mining.
According to reports, the action is mainly aimed at the illegal installation of mining machines and illegal use of electricity in residential areas. Since mining consumes a lot of electricity, it has caused serious overload of power grids in some communities and even partial power outages, and the government has issued a stern warning. The Ministry of Electricity has begun to cut off the power supply of real estate related to mining on a large scale, and all applications for re-powering must be approved by the Ministry of the Interior.
More importantly, the Kuwait Anti-Money Laundering Committee has banned all crypto mining activities, and has been supported by financial regulators including the National Bank of Kuwait. This indicates that the country no longer tolerates any form of crypto mining at the policy level, for reasons not only related to energy security, but also anti-money laundering and regulatory compliance issues.
It is reported that the authorities are currently conducting door-to-door inspections in multiple communities, and more cases of illegal mining are expected to be discovered in the coming weeks. This rectification action, driven by the joint efforts of energy, finance, law enforcement and administrative systems, indicates that crypto mining is facing a trend of overall tightening policies in countries with high temperatures and high electricity consumption. For miners in the Middle East and other countries with energy subsidies, this move may have a spillover effect.
